The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, or BBMP, is the body that looks after Bengaluru's roads, parks, street lights, and garbage collection. From May 15, 2025, this civic body will be renamed the Greater Bengaluru Authority (sometimes called the Greater Bangalore Development Authority, or GBDA). The Karnataka government passed the new law to make city management clearer and more focused. A formal government notice will appear on May 14, 2025, and all BBMP signs, papers, and websites will switch to the new name after that date.
City leaders felt the old BBMP Act needed an upgrade. They passed the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, to replace the BBMP Act of 2021. The new law aims to:
Even though the name is changing, the area covered by the BBMP will not grow right away. The city limit still covers about 786 square kilometres. No nearby towns or villages will join the new Greater Bengaluru region at first. This pause gives planners time to study where and how to add more areas later. For now, everyone inside today's city lines remains under the same boundary.
Under the new law:
Switching to the GBA may delay city elections. The election commission must redraw ward maps and decide which seats are reserved for certain groups. These steps take time. The next municipal polls could wait until late 2026, after all new maps and rules are ready. Meanwhile, an administrator will keep the old BBMP running under the new Act's guidance.
In the weeks after May 15, 2025, you'll notice:
Renaming BBMP to the Greater Bengaluru Authority marks a fresh start for India's Silicon Valley. The new name and structure aim to help this growing city run more smoothly. While your daily services remain the same at first, improved planning and clearer zones promise better roads, greener parks, and faster repairs in the years ahead. Watch for the formal notification on May 14, 2025, and get ready to say hello to the GBDA.
